‘It’s gotta have soul!’

DJ Rosa G

Rosa Groenewoud, alias DJ Rosa G, is 42 years old and lives in Amsterdam. She is born in Liberia, Western Africa. Her love for music with soul, like r&b, hiphop, jazz, funk, groove and dance, is mainly originated in her roots.

~ By Annelies Hintjes

Rosa G has been a radio host for more than 20 years. Her passion for music has also driven her to DJing. As a host, she has worked for Trijaya FM (in Indonesia), New Dance Radio, Slam FM, Sun FM, Q-the-Beat and – since some years –, a queer radio station on the internet where she presents the program The Champagne Room every Friday night, with lots of bubbles and good music (
Anno 2011 she has been a DJ on several parties in the Escape, Flex Bar, Strand-West, Beach Club Azzurro Zandvoort, Bloc 23 and during the Roze Westerdagen at the gay monument in Amsterdam. Pink Pearls Women’s Parties has contracted Rosa G for its women’s parties in the Vrije Val in Amsterdam.

How did your love for music start?
“I once started a jazz program on the Indonesian radio, when I lived and worked in Indonesia. Since then, I think DJing is one of the nicest ways to reach people and share music. In the early days, I was listening to the radio 24 hours a day and I wrote out the entire Top 40 while listening to it. That passion never faded away, on the contrary: it only got stronger.”
“I’ve grown up in the tropics, where all the children were of course playing outside most of the time. But when it rained, I went inside to the record container of my dad and played his music – from classic to blues and jazz, and from ABBA to Baccara and The Beatles – I just consumed it!”
“The DJing has always been in me. When I couldn’t even really walk yet, I went to the pick-up, got my favorite LP of that week out and started dancing on the music. So yeah, the love for music started really early in my life.”

How did your music taste develop after that?
“My taste for music has always been very eclectic, but with a clear preference for the soulful, funky sounds. As a teenager I loved ballads and other sweet songs. When I got older, other music added up to that, but my preference for black music will always stay. It’s just my groove, it’s gotta have soul!”
“As a DJ, I play a mixture of funky, jazzy, golden disco oldies and happy vocal house. And a bit of happy hip hop of course, for fun! A part is recognizable, but preferable in a remix, and another part is a bit more obscure, but it’s always nice and accessible! I like to play music that is uplifting, makes people happy and gets them to dance.”

What are your plans for the future?
“I always want to make radio, because that’s just a passion of mine. It enables me to share my music with other people and also tell a story, because every song has a story! Next to that, I just want to keep DJing, especially at the beach or on a sunny terrace. Some sun, a cocktail and good vibes, what more do you need in life?”
